FreeBandy is a Swedish “invention” that has attracted thousands supporters and practisers – both in Sweden and several other European countries – in just little over a year. Despite the fact that FreeBandy is a newcomer in the modern realm of sports, it’s a game played with a stick and a ball that resembles the ancient games that the native Americans used to play several hundred years ago; simple rules, obvious joy of the game, battle, prestige, artistry and social play in one wonderful mix. (Even though the natives probably played with more serious matters at stake.) There are even Egyptian paintings from thousands of years ago that show games with a stick and a ball that resembles FreeBandy.

When the roots of the game are actually ancient; equipment, technique and materials are developed for modern qualifications, standards and possibilities.

The name of FreeBandy didn’t come out of the blue. The idea is that both the game and the sport, its elite form, should be as free and dynamic as possible. There are no actual rules that state how the game HAS to be played. Instead, there are some basic ethical principles and values that every FreeBandy player is expected to understand and respect.
